If you are wondering where the term “Research Software Engineer (RSE)” came from then a new report could help to explain. The first State of the Nation Report for Research Software Engineers provides a history of the RSE campaign and a snapshot of the RSE community as it stands today.
PRACE has recently announced its 15th Call for Proposals for Project Access. The current call provides access to various European Tier 0 systems from Bull, Cray, Lenovo and IBM. These comprise a mixture of standard x86, Knights Landing and GPU platforms. Joint submissions from academia and industry are particularly welcome.

Our flagship computational facility, The CSF, is currently only available to those researchers contributing funds to the platform. However we are pleased to announce that our recent case to provide limited free-at-the-point-of-use computational resource to users without funds, particularly for those who are not computational specialists, has been successful.
Robert Haines from Research IT recently attended the Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop ‘Engineering Academic Software‘, co-organised by the Software Sustainability Institute‘s Manchester PI Carole Goble. The primary topics of discussion at the workshop were how to build the research software of the future and how to get credit for doing so.
The Data Science Institute invites submissions for proposals with the potential to develop successful interdisciplinary data science activities at The University of Manchester. Joint applications from researchers developing collaborations across different disciplines are encouraged.
